The Congaree Foundation, the non-profit associated with Congaree Golf Club in South Carolina, has teamed up with 2009 US Open champion Lucas Glover to raise money in their effort to revitalize Sergeant Jasper Golf Club, a historic nine-hole course the foundation acquired in March.
Founded in the late 1960s, Sergeant Jasper Country Club was a world-class 18-hole facility that once welcomed the likes of Jack Nicklaus. Over the years, though, the club saw decreasing play, and the course was cut down to nine holes. The Congaree Foundation bought the facility, and they re-opened it on March 2.
Glover will donate $100 for every birdie and $500 for every eagle he makes at this week's RBC Heritage toward the restoration effort, which is central to the foundation's mission to impact the lives of young people through golf.
“As an Ambassador of Congaree, and someone who is passionate about providing access to the game, the efforts to help and maintain The Sarge are something that are near and dear to my heart,” Glover said. “I’m committed to putting my full energy and support behind it.”
Davis Love III and JT Poston are among other pros contributing in the effort.
The foundation will provide access to the club for local high school golf teams who will utilize Sergeant Jasper as their home course. Three high-school golf teams already call the Sarge home, and there are plans to host the local First Tee chapter, too. The course will also be a low-cost option in the area, hopefully spurring more new golfers and creating industry jobs.
This is the latest junior golf initiative for Congaree. The foundation hosts underserved and ambitious high school students for the Congaree Global Golf Initiative -- a week-long camp that provides golf instruction and prepares participants for college admissions process.
Congaree Golf Club will host the PGA Tour’s Palmetto Championship on June 10-13, 2021.
