Pebble Beach Golf Links will host another pair of USGA championships, with the governing body announcing the Monterey Peninsula will host the 2023 US Women's Open and 2027 US Open.
This announcement comes on the heels of already hosting the 2019 US Open as part of a celebration of the club's 100th anniversary.
The USGA has committed to bringing the national championship to Pebble Beach every 10 years or so, with the course and resort hosting in 1972, 1982, 1992, 2000 and 2010 in recent memory. Were it not for the centennial of the seaside course, it likely would have been slotted in 2020. The championship will be played June 17-20, marking the seventh time the US Open is at Pebble Beach.
Given the run of future US Open venues, it appears the USGA's experimentation with new venues is largely over, at least for the next decade. Shinnecock Hills hosts in 2018, with Pebble Beach, Winged Foot and Torrey Pines after that. The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., gets to host in 2022 after some 30 years out of the rotation. Los Angeles Country Club gets a crack in 2023, but it is a classic design renovated by Gil Hanse and Geoff Shackelford.
This run comes after Chambers Bay and Erin Hills got nods in 2015 and 2017. The USGA is planning well in advance, perhaps trying to land great clubs in the future to lock them up for a variety of purposes, including ticket sales, TV contracts and generating buzz for what is now the richest purse in golf, at $12 million in 2017.
While the talk of future US Women's Open venues perhaps doesn't draw the same buzz, the lineup is very good. The Women's Open at Pebble Beach is a first, and it will be played June 1-4 in 2023. The Pebble Open follows after Shoal Creek hosts in 2018, the Country Club of Charleston in 2019, Champions Golf Club in Houston in 2020, Olympic Club in 2021. The 2022 US Women's Open is yet to be announced.
