Rumbling Bald, a North Carolina golf resort featuring 36 holes to play, has announced significant improvements to its lead Apple Valley Course. The Dan Maples design will move from the original Bentgrass putting surfaces to Champion Bermudagrass in June. The transition installs a grass that rolls as well as Bentgrass but is easier to maintain and is more heat tolerant. Champion Bermudagrass can also create faster putting surfaces — as much as two feet on the Stimpmeter compared to other ultradwarf strains.
“We provide our golfers with the best possible experiences and Champion Bermuda checked all the boxes,” says Rumbling Bald General Manager Jeff Geisler. “Dan Maples’ layout and routing at Apple Valley is so pure from tee to green that smooth, true rolling Champion greens are the perfect fit.”
Rumbling Bald is located an hour by car from Asheville and two hours from Charlotte, on the north end of Lake Lure in western North Carolina. In addition to the Apple Valley Course, there’s the W.B. Lewis-designed Bald Mountain Course.
Apple Valley maxes out around 6,800 yards, is complete with mountain lakes on 12 holes and features sweeping views of Bald Mountain and the surrounding Lake Lure area. Despite it being a mountain course, the overwhelming percentage of shots are flat or downhill.
Bald Mountain, the more friendly course, tops out at 6,300 yards and has five 5-pars, five 3-pars and eight 4-pars. The 16th green is the backdrop of a scene from the movie “Dirty Dancing.”
The resort has lake tours, boat rentals, tennis, pickleball, hiking trails and a full-service spa. The restaurants offer tasty food in a casual setting with a full range of views. Resort guests can stay in 150 vacation rental homes, condos or studios, able to accommodate groups of various sizes.
The resort is offering a variety of golf packages, including those for groups of various sizes, as well length and time of stay. For example, the Hole-in-One package is $255 per person and includes a round of golf on each resort course with unlimited range balls and a two-night stay with a complimentary breakfast each day.
For groups of 12 or more, Rumbling Bald offers free green fees for group leaders booking their first trip to the resort.
