Boxer Oscar De La Hoya became the latest golf-loving celebrity to say publicly that Donald Trump cheats at golf.
De La Hoya said Wednesday that in a 2014 round at Trump National Los Angeles, Trump took three breakfast balls followed by a fourth ball that the boxer was certain went out of bounds. However, Trump rode ahead in his golf cart and told De La Hoya straight-faced that he'd found his first ball in the middle of the first fairway.
On another hole, De La Hoya claims, Trump hit his tee shot on a 170-yard par 3 into a hazard. Trump again sped off in his cart ahead of his playing partner, saying he found his ball 3 feet from the pin -- and that he was giving himself the birdie putt.
Needless to say, De La Hoya is not a fan of Trump. He said, “I’m not [voting] for someone who cheats in golf.”
Trump defended himself on Thursday, despite the protestations of one of his sons, in comments to the Associated Press, saying he "respects the game too much to cheat and is good enough to have won a number of club championships." The presumptive Republican nominee said De La Hoya made his claims about Trump in an effort to drum up promotion for a fight under his label.
The problem is that multiple people beyond the Golden Boy have said Trump cheats at golf, typically noting that Trump's tee shots have a way of magically landing in the fairway.
