In the often tumultuous life of a PGA Tour caddie, the only thing that’s certain is that nothing is certain. Life can change on a weekly basis.
After a split with Billy Horschel following the Waste Management Phoenix Open earlier this month that ended a five-and-a-half-year partnership, veteran caddie Micah Fugitt is now working for Bryson DeChambeau.
Fugitt was on the bag at last week’s Genesis Open, where DeChambeau withdrew before completing two rounds citing a hand injury.
“Billy told me he needed to change things up,” Fugitt told me this week. “Sometimes a fresh start is good for the player and caddie.”
Fugitt met DeChambeau during the Sony Open in January but the two didn’t actually talk to any extent until the day before the Genesis Open began.
“The first time we officially met was before the third round of the Sony Open when we were paired together,” Fugitt said. “His coach and agent contacted me a few days after Billy let me go.”
DeChambeau has struggled this season missing five cuts in 10 events. Fugitt hopes to use his experience to help the former U.S. Amateur and NCAA champion develop as a player and better prepare for tournaments.
“I'm hoping to help him with his course management and help him keep a positive attitude on the course,” Fugitt said. “I would also like to help him learn how to manage his time better during practice days. I just want to help him be better prepared when it comes tournament time.”
“The number one goal right now is to win. And that includes majors.”
Fugitt holds no ill feelings or regrets away from his time with Horschel – a run that included Horschel capturing the 2014 FedEx Cup.
“Every job out here is week-to-week,” Fugitt said. “We had a great time together, traveled the world together, and went through the highs and lows together. He's a great guy and he took good care of me.”
