A battery-powered vehicle, developed by the University of Bologna, which is recharged through the 5 square meters of solar panels with which it is equipped
There is a solar-powered car, it’s called Emilia4, it’s Italian and if it had production costs very different from those it has, it would be the real revolution in mobility. There would be none for anyone. Electric, hydrogen and so on; all outclassed by an energy source that does not produce pollution and which, if everything goes as planned – will not run out for at least the next 5 billion years. Yes, Emilia4 moves thanks to the light produced by the sun. And it does it really well.
The presentation was in Rome, in one of the most institutional places in the capital, the Farnesina, seat of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. Here, alongside Emilia4 – among others – Manlio Di Stefano, Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs, intervened, underlining how the Farnesina is at the forefront of what is environmental sustainability. Hence the “Farnesina Verde Award”, which involves Italian diplomatic offices abroad (both Consulates and Embassies), rewarding those who have made concrete steps and choices in environmental matters. One example among many? The Italian Embassy in Brazil, considered “zero waste” and which uses a composting plant for garbage from which it obtains fertilizer.
Therefore, there could not have been a better opportunity to reveal some of the secrets of Emilia4, created by our University of Bologna, Faculty of Engineering obviously, in collaboration with the Serbian one in Belgrade. The car, as mentioned, moves thanks to simple solar energy and to do so takes advantage of the presence on the body of 5 square meters of panels. The energy then ends up charging a lithium battery with a capacity of about 30 kWh. Two engines, positioned on the rear and placed near the two rear wheels, capable of returning 1.1 kW of power.
Translated it means that traveling on average around 50/60 Km / h it is possible to take advantage of a range of about 1,000 Km. With a maximum speed which in any case is able to exceed 100 km / h quite easily. The bodywork is made of carbon fiber, weighs very little – just over 300 kg – while the 476 cm in length allow Emilia4 to accommodate up to 4 passengers on board. However, the value of this jewel of technology travels over 300 thousand euros, making it – for the moment – a real laboratory in constant development. As fascinating, well-finished and credible as it is difficult to see in the near future busy on the roads every day.
