Fiat, the new electric car will be born in Serbia

Perhaps not everyone is aware of it yet, but very soon on the automotive market, according to what has been announced by the Stellantis Group, a new version of the Fiat 500L will be produced, actually its modern heir, but for the first time it will be equipped with 100% electric motorization.

This is a further important step of the automotive giant regarding the energy transition of which so much has been said in recent years, which unfortunately it is endangered today by the war that continues unabated between Russia and Ukraine, devastating worlds and global economies. Speaking of the new electric car, the Stellantis plant where it will be produced was chosen: that’s what it is Serbian, in Kragujevac. It is here that, starting in 2024, the heir to the electric 500L will be built.

Electric cars in Serbia: the announcement of Stellantis

An agreement was signed with the government of Belgrade, on the occasion of which Stellantis announced the decision taken: the new Fiat electric car will be built in Serbia. The aforementioned agreement, in detail, provides a total investment of 190 million euroswhich will be used to restore the old Zastava factory that was taken over in 2019 by what was then the Fiat Group.

Production at the Kragujevac plant

Serbia will contribute financially with 48 million euros. These investments have a major objective, namely to support the installation works of a new platform for the production of electric cars. In fact, from the assembly lines of the Serbian plant, where the electric heir to the Fiat 500L will be produced, a zero-emission car will have to come out – according to Stellantis’ plans – but the plant could also be created to be able to support the production volumes of an additional model.

Aleksandar Vucic, Serbian president, after signing the contract, said: “Today a new era begins, the production of electric vehicles should start in 2024 ”. We currently have no further details and specific information regarding the new electric that will be produced in Serbia. For months, however, there has also been talk of the arrival of a vehicle that could have the appearance of the Fiat Centoventi, the concept car presented more than 3 years ago on the occasion of the last edition of the Geneva Motor Show – the much loved Swiss event now blocked from 2020 due to Covid.

The union leader Zoran Miljkovic actually denied the rumors about the Centoventi, speaking of a new electric Panda, but Carlos Tavares has absolutely not expressed himself in this regard, at least for the moment. The manager only said: “The new electric platform fits perfectly with entry products A, B and C and strengthens efficient and clean urban mobility solutions for our brands.”

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic added: “With the signing of the contract, Serbia will play a key role in the implementation of the strategic plan of Dare Forward 2030 of Stellantis, one of the world’s leading car manufacturers. The decision of this auto industry giant to modernize and improve the existing production plant in Kragujevac offers us the opportunity to become one of the leading electric car manufacturers and thus to significantly change the image of Serbia ”.

In fact, in the country’s programs there is the will to totally eliminate traditional motors to combustion by 2030, and for this reason Serbia has set in motion for the construction of new recharging points and the adoption of renewable sources.
