Tonale Plug-In Hybrid Q4 efficient sportiness in Alfa style – Tests and News

Nine months after the initial debut with the Mhev 130 and 160 HP followed by the subsequent introduction in July of the 130 HP turbodiesel variant, the Tonale Plug-In Hybrid Q4 arrives to complete the launch of this model which – the Alfa Romeo CEO reiterated Jean-Philippe Learned during the presentation at Balocco – is strategic for the growth and internationalization of the premium Stellantis brand.

The price list for this new version starts at 51,600 euros for the Special Launch Edition and reaches 55,900 for the Veloce. Among other things, this brand new rechargeable electrified version redefines the paradigm of efficient sportiness of the ‘new’ Alfa Romeo, the first step towards high performance and driving pleasure of the future according to Alfa Romeo. Tonale Plug-In Hybrid Q4 also introduces two significant innovations in the Alfa world: it is the first model that can travel 80 km in town in 100% electric mode and it is also the first Q4 of the brand in which all-wheel drive is obtained with a super-efficient wiring diagram.
On the road, what is most noticeable and appreciated are the 280 HP available which give the Tonale Plug-In Hybrid Q4 that true Alfa character that this modern and elegant model deserves.
Thanks also to the maximum torque available from very low engine speeds as supported by the 250 Nm of the electric unit alone – and to the perfect calibration of the 6-speed automatic gearbox, this Tonale Phev allows you to exploit the two extremes of its character with equal pleasure.
This SUV can in fact be 100% electric and therefore extremely docile and relaxing when you have to move in traffic or simply in total respect for nature given the CO2 emissions which, in hybrid use as a whole, are reduced by up to 26 g/km. But also very feisty and worthy heir to the Alfa racing DNA, with the ability to sprint from 0 to 100 in 6.2 seconds and to reach 206 km/h in hybrid mode, all with the (correct) feeling of great reactivity of mechanics and all-wheel drive due to the effect of the e-Drive.
The rear axle is in fact driven by the 90 kW electric motor while the front axle is driven by a 180 HP petrol engine, guaranteeing maximum stability even in off-road performance and on low-grip roads.
What is proposed by Tonale Plug-In is therefore an advanced 4×4 hybrid system which implements four-wheel drive without physically connecting the two propulsion systems, but coordinating them exclusively with the electronics, which makes it even lighter and free from absorption by of mechanical parts, for unrivaled handling and an immediacy of response that enhances emotions and safety.
Driving the Tonale Plug-In Hybrid Q4 you really forget that under the bonnet the hybrid system includes a 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine of just 1.3 litres, truly efficient. To give soul to the C-suv, Alfa Romeo works together with the electric section powered by a 306 Volt lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 15.5 kWh which offers a total range of over 600 km.
Thanks to the Phev architecture, consumption is reduced to 1.14 liters per 100 km in the Wltp cycle and a full battery charge takes less than 2.5 hours when using the 7.4 kW onboard charger.
In the new Tonale Plug-In Hybrid Q4, the functions of the Alfa DNA drive selector have been redesigned to enhance efficiency and performance. This single selector manages the Q4 traction and the intervention of the control electronics, coordinates the action of the engines and gearbox in an optimal way, modifies the sensitivity of the controls.
In particular, the Advance Efficiency mode is calibrated to obtain maximum efficiency in full electric driving.
For example, when the accelerator is released, Tonale continues sailing, while when going downhill, the new eCoasting Descent Control function automatically intervenes, which maintains a constant speed of 50 km/h, adjustable with a light touch of the accelerator or brake.
Then there are numerous features called EV Features such as E-Save which allows you to recharge or maintain the battery level when the internal combustion engine is on. Like the Regenerative braking function, it allows energy to be recovered during the deceleration or braking phases and stored in the battery pack. And like E-Coasting which allows energy recovery when slowing down even with the brake pedal released.
