Who is Umberto Tozzi: biography

Umberto Tozzi was born on March 4, 1952 in Turin, Italy, to a police officer father and a stay-at-home mother. He began studying guitar at the age of 13 and at 15 he started playing in a band with his brother Franco, also a singer. In 1976, he released his first album, “Donna Amante Mia”, but it was the single “Ti Amo”, released in 1977, that gave him international success, becoming a hit in Italy, France and Europe and selling over 8 million of copies. In 1979, he achieved further success with the single “Gloria”, which conquered radio airplay and number one on all European charts, selling a record 29 million copies.

Both Umberto Tozzi’s hits, “Ti Amo” and “Gloria”, were covered in English by Laura Branigan and reached the American charts. “Ti Amo” was also performed by Dalida and Howard Carpendale. In the 80s, Tozzi continued to be a protagonist with successes such as “Stella Stai” and “Notte Rosa”. In 1987, he participated in the Sanremo Festival with Gianni Morandi and Enrico Ruggeri with the song “Si può dare di più”, which won the competition and became a hit, as well as the soundtrack of the Italian national singers. In the same year, Tozzi also participated in the Eurovision Song Contest with “Gente di mare” together with Raf, finishing in third place. Tozzi returned to Sanremo three more times: in 1991 with “The others are us”, in 2000 with “Un’altra vita” and in 2005 with “Uomini”.

Since his debut, Umberto Tozzi has released 34 albums, including 18 studio albums, 3 live albums and 13 collections. In 2017, to celebrate 40 years of “Ti Amo”, he released a new album containing a special version in duet with Anastacia and announced a long tour in Italy, Europe and America. Tozzi was a very active artist, with the exception of 2017, when he had to suspend concerts due to illness. He underwent emergency surgery for intestinal diverticula, an infection that risked becoming septicemia, but fortunately he was rescued in time. Tozzi has sold over 80 million records worldwide and has had numerous hits, such as “Cosa serve le mani”, “Tu”, “Nell’aria c’è”, “Un’altra vita”, “E non volo ” and many others.

Umberto Tozzi has been married to Monica Michielotto since 1995. The two are happily married and have two children together, Gianluca and Natasha. Tozzi also has a son, Armando, from a previous relationship. Gianluca was engaged to the showgirl Raffaella Fico and has a son, Andrei, with his ex-wife Elisa. Natasha had an affair with Stefano Riucci, a well-known Italian entrepreneur. Tozzi does not share many photos of his private life on his social profiles. In the past, Tozzi was linked to Serafina Scialò, who was erroneously considered his ex-wife. Tozzi denied ever being married to Scialò and claimed he forgave her after she appropriated some money he lent him.

Tozzi also has a residence in Montecarlo, where he has lived since 1991. He and his lawyer argued that it was an injustice, as Tozzi is resident abroad.
