Umberto Tozzi was born on March 4, 1952 in Turin, Italy, to a police officer father and a stay-at-home mother. He began studying guitar at the age of 13 and at 15 he started playing in a band with his brother Franco, also a singer. In 1976, he released his first album, “Donna Amante Mia”, but it was the single “Ti Amo”, released in 1977, that gave him international success, becoming a hit in Italy, France and Europe and selling over 8 million of copies. In 1979, he achieved further success with the single “Gloria”, which conquered radio airplay and number one on all European charts, selling a record 29 million copies.
Both Umberto Tozzi’s hits, “Ti Amo” and “Gloria”, were covered in English by Laura Branigan and reached the American charts. “Ti Amo” was also performed by Dalida and Howard Carpendale. In the 80s, Tozzi continued to be a protagonist with successes such as “Stella Stai” and “Notte Rosa”. In 1987, he participated in the Sanremo Festival with Gianni Morandi and Enrico Ruggeri with the song “Si può dare di più”, which won the competition and became a hit, as well as the soundtrack of the Italian national singers. In the same year, Tozzi also participated in the Eurovision Song Contest with “Gente di mare” together with Raf, finishing in third place. Tozzi returned to Sanremo three more times: in 1991 with “The others are us”, in 2000 with “Un’altra vita” and in 2005 with “Uomini”.

Tozzi was a very active artist, with the exception of 2017, when he had to suspend concerts due to illness. He underwent emergency surgery for intestinal diverticula, an infection that risked becoming septicemia, but fortunately he was rescued in time. Tozzi has sold over 80 million records worldwide and has had numerous hits, such as “Cosa serve le mani”, “Tu”, “Nell’aria c’è”, “Un’altra vita”, “E non volo ” and many others.
