The new Netflix miniseries allows viewers to choose the sequence of the story
It can be seen on
On Netflix January 1st is out “kaleidoscope” – in Italian “Kaleidoscope” and previously entitled “Jigsaw” – which already encloses its particularity in the title, that is a non-linear narration that allows viewers to decide in which order to see the eight episodes that compose it. The previous reference, of course, it is the 2018 interactive film “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch”, although in the case of “Kaleidoscope” there are some differences.
The “Kaleidoscope” series
The new miniseries is loosely based on a true story, that of the disappearance of seventy billion dollars in bonds, which occurred in downtown Manhattan during Hurricane Sandy. “Kaleidoscope” tells precisely the theft of a gang of robbers led by Giancarlo Esposito (interpreter of Gus Fring in the series “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul”) inside the vault, apparently impenetrable, built by Roger Salas (Rufus Sewell).
The plot of “Kaleidoscope”
The story takes place over 25 years, following a band of master thieves as they attempt to open a seemingly inviolable vault in order to get the biggest loot in history. Under the watchful eye of the world’s most powerful corporate security and law enforcement team, each episode reveals a piece of an elaborate puzzle of corruption, greed, revenge, schemes, alliances and betrayals. How did the gang of thieves engineer the plan? Who will get away with it? Who can be trusted?
The episodes
The peculiarity of “Kaleidoscope” consists precisely in the order of the episodes, which have neither number nor title, but are associated with a color: “Yellow” (five weeks before the robbery), “Green” (seven years before), “Purple” (24 years before the heist), “Blue” (five days before), “Orange” (three weeks before), “Red” (the morning after the theft), “Pink” (six months before), and ” White” (the episode of the robbery). Based on the chosen order, the viewer witnesses the entire story: the actual theft, what happened after the heist or what happened twenty years earlier, in order to discover the genesis of the robbery and the relationship between the various personages. Netflix offers each user a random viewing order because the series has been designed to offer a different experience for everyone and because they have been designed to make the story always coherent and usable in any order you watch it. But there is no doubt that there are different combinations that make the experience more or less satisfying and for this reason we offer you some viewing orders.
The chronological order
It is a classic order, the chronological one, which tells the story of the theft from “day zero”, which took place twenty-four years earlier, reporting the various moments up to the theft and subsequent moments.
- “Viola” (24 years before the robbery)
- “Green” (7 years earlier)
- “Yellow” (5 weeks before)
- “Orange” (3 weeks before)
- “Blue” (5 days before)
- “White” (the day of the coup)
- “Red” (the morning after)
- “Rose” (six months later)
As if it were a Tarantino film
Inspired by Quentin Tarantino’s films, this order mixes episodes from the present with the past, in order to try to explain the consequences of the hit in everything that came before.
- “Blue”
- “Green”
- “Yellow”
- “Orange”
- “Violet”
- “Rose”
- “White”
- “Red”
The (possible) best order
According to some, the best order to watch the episodes of “Kaleidoscope” is the one – similar to the first seasons of “Paper House” – which mixes the near, distant, present and future, like a crime film.
- “Yellow”
- “Violet”
- “Orange”
- “Green”
- “Blue”
- “White”
- “Red”
- “Rose”
