The sound of a flute accompanies the sinuous movements of a ninja, who in the light of a blood-red twilight rises on the tip of a tower. The click of his arm, the “click” that is triggered by his glove, the hidden blade that extends from his limb, ready to dispense death as he passes. Yes, that’s right: the dream of most of the fans is finally a reality. Assassin’s Creed is about to take us to a feudal Japan torn apart by the conflict between hooded and Templars. This will be the next great chapter of the saga, but not before having played the parenthesis dedicated to Basim in Assassin’s Creed Mirage (here is our preview of Assassin’s Creed Mirage). The promise of Ubisoft during the Ubisoft Forward, however, speaks for itself: the true successor of Valhalla has the flavor of the Rising Sun. IS Assassin’s Creed Codename Red the code name of this project, and while waiting to find out more we want to summarize what we know – as well as give you some hope and speculation about what the game might be like.
Ninjas according to Ubisoft
Nothing but a short but intense teaser trailer to show us what will be the next big iteration of the saga. Only a few seconds to reveal to us, therefore, a golden sun on a scarlet sky, while a downward movement of the camera leaves no doubt about the setting of Codename Red: the unmistakable architectures of feudal Japan make their way into the frame while one shinobi appears in front of us, and then gives way to the game logo accompanied by a spectacular re-arrangement of Ezio’s Family composed with Japanese instruments.
We do not know anything else about the setting or the protagonist: the silhouette, for example, does not allow us to understand whether it is a man or a woman, but it cannot be excluded that the company continues on the path of inclusiveness, leaving to the player the choice of impersonating a male or female avatar.
There is little room for speculation, however, on the precise historical period in which the Japanese Assassin’s Creed will take place: in fact, we know that the ninja officially appeared during the Sengoku periodor in the fifteenth century or a little earlier – some testimonies, in fact, date back to the Heian period, around the twelfth century – and that the last chronicles in which the famous mercenary fighters appear as protagonists date back to the seventeenth century, during the Tokugawa shogunate.
Although we do not know the exact date on which the events of this chapter will take place, in short, we can hypothesize that the story could very easily be placed between 1500 and 1700in conjunction with other historical episodes such as the Ezio saga or the epic of Shao Jun in China.
The heir of Odyssey and Valhalla
The information that Ubisoft has given us about Red during this Forward is few but essential: first of all, the company reiterated that it has consciously fulfilled one of the greatest wishes of its community. In fact, since the beginning of the saga, the Assassin’s Creed fandom was clamoring for an episode set in the mythical feudal Japan, between ninja and samurai, which is why it was finally decided to go along with it.
That Red is in effect the new main title of the brand, and that Mirage therefore represents only a small parenthesis to pay homage to the 15 years of the first Assassin’s Creed, this Forward has reiterated: Codename Red is in fact called “the next premium flagship title” of the franchise, as well as “the future of Assassin’s Creed open world RPG games”. With this statement, the company substantially confirms that the rolistic furrow traced by the Origins-Odyssey-Valhalla trilogy will continue to flourish, and that in fact the hooded saga is in effect a series of RPGs. It is no coincidence that the development team is Ubisoft Québec, the staff who gave life to AC Odyssey and Syndicate (in addition to having created the expansions of AC3 and Black Flag), and the works proceed under the supervision of Jonathan Dumont: he is, for the uninitiated, the creative director of the epic in Ancient Greece. Precisely these last clues should therefore testify to us that Red’s role-playing imprint will be really strong, and that even the mythological dimension could play a very important role for the plot and gameplay of the game. At the end of the presentation, in fact, Ubisoft confirmed that players will be able to live “a very powerful fantasy experience in shinobi sauce”.
It is therefore likely that the superhuman approach that characterized the heroes of Odyssey, Kassandra and Alexios, could also be repeated in the feudal Japan of the Québec team, and that Japanese folklore could represent a very important element of the imagination. The possibility of being able to wander among the spirits, demons and creatures of ancient Japanese legends, in fact, could tease a large part of the community, but in this sense it will be appropriate to wait for more details on the plot and on the game mechanics of the production. In the meantime, we can start dreaming: the way of the ninja according to Ubisoft has just begun …
