ASUS Zenfone 9 review: it can seduce you

ASUS Zenfone 9 review

ASUS is perhaps the company that has most rationalized its own lineup of products, thus being able to really focus only on valuable devices. Thus were born the various Zenfone and the various RsOG Phone. Today is the turn of the new Zenfone 9which starts from its logic of “everything” in a compact body.

Packaging

In the recycled paper packaging of ASUS Zefnone 9 we find in addition to the smartphone the USB-C / USB-C cable, the 30W power supply and an appreciated semi-rigid plastic cover (you will understand later why). We also had the opportunity to try the Devilcase covers (€ 39), RhinoShield (€ 29) and above all the original Connex accessory that allows you to attach the accessory that acts as a stand (to which you can also associate an app to the opening) and the one that acts as a wallet. We are very happy to see that after the ROG also on Zenfone ASUS is focusing on building a ecosystem of accessorieswhich hardly any manufacturer does.

Construction and Ergonomics

ASUS Zenfone 9 you buy it first of all because it is compact. This is because the smartphone is a clear breaking point compared to all the competitors in circulation. There is no Pro version, there is no Max version, there is no Plus version. Either compact or nothing. A courageous choice that we however support: no dualisms, no ambiguity. For ASUS the top of the range is pocketable, even if it were only to stand out from the crowd. The smartphone is also very refined from an aesthetic point of view, with a square metal profile and a back cover in rough plastic, extremely pleasant to the touch and also to the eye. Also on the back stand out the two cameras set in two large (at least in proportion) metal circles.

The only note we want to make is that the grease from the hands seems to slightly stain the body, which is then difficult to clean. It is not something that is easily noticed, but against the light you could see it and this after less than two weeks of use. A protective cover could be handy.

The smartphone is also resistant to water and dust according to IP68 standardsomething that makes the compactness of the smartphone and also the presence of the headphone hole, even more extraordinary.

And also for 2022 Zenfone is a true top-of-the-range smartphone. We have in fact the processor Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, well 8 or 16 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128 or 256 GB of UFS 3.1 RAM. Once again, no possibility of expanding it with SD. Connectivity is complete: NFC, Wi-Fi 6EBluetooth 5.2, 5G, dual SIM support (unfortunately not eSIM) and as already mentioned also audio jack for headphones. However, the USB-C port does not support video output. The fingerprint reader is located in the power button and is fast and accurate. The speaker is instead supported by the ear capsule for a powerful stereo sound, at times almost too much, making the back of the small smartphone vibrate.

Camera

Zenfone 9 remains on the dual camera paradigm. So again this year no zoom camera. A pity, but unfortunately aligned with the not so lucky year for this component, even in the competitors. The main sensor is a good one though 50 megapixel ƒ / 1.9 optically stabilized on 6 axes. Coupled with this we find a 12-megapixel ƒ / 2.2 wide-angle lens. The front sensor remains at 12 ƒ / 2.5 megapixels.

The shots we took from Zenfone 9 convinced us. A few sporadic shots with a less than perfect light balance (maybe a little burnt on the highlights) or some photos in the dim light a little bit defined: these are the only reasons that made us notice the difference between the images of this smartphone and those of a premium phone more noble. The images are sharp, the focus is very good and even in low light the resulting shots are very good, with a manual night mode not particularly effective, since this mode is activated anyway even in automatic mode. The shots with the wide-angle camera are also discreet.

The stabilization system is very good, which also proposes a circle within the frame to understand if we are moving too much for the system to compensate for the movement. A very clever way to let the user know in advance if the movement is too excessive to have a quality final image. This up to 4K at 60fps. You can also make movies in 8K to 24fps but definitely less stable, or on the contrary in Full HD at 60fps with truly gimbal stabilization.

Display

The ASUS Zenfone 9 screen is a 5.9 inches with FullHD + resolution (1080 x 2400 pixels), technology AMOLED, refresh rate up to 120 Hz and touch sampling at 240 Hz. The smartphone then has a maximum brightness of 800 nits which become 1,100 nits in HDR mode. Not at the level of other smartphones premium but still good. Of course, we leave the size considerations to you, based on your usage. The glass is still protected by Gorilla Glass Victus.

Software

Zenfone 9 is launched on the market with Android 12 on board, currently updated with the patches of June 2022. The user experience is not too far from what you would have with a Google Pixel (net of apps and exclusive Google services), since the interface is practically identical. ASUS, however, has not only implemented the Google software but has enriched it with exclusive functions, such as the ability to program the power button if it is pressed for a long time, pressed twice or if the finger is swiped over. Similarly, you can associate a double-tap action on the back, as well as access your favorite applications from the side panel. Among the other most popular functions we find the ability to hide apps or protect them with a password and the ability to split apps to use them with two accounts.

The company has never been too quick with the updates of its smartphones, but we have a hint that something could change soon. However, since it is not confirmed, it is obviously not a consideration that we will put on the plate and which we will take into account in our scores.

Autonomy

ASUS Zenfone 9 manages to integrate a much larger battery inside 4,300 mAh. And this really is something of a miracle considering the size of the device. The autonomy of the smartphone is very good, with the work day completed without problems. A great demonstration of optimization by ASUS. Charging is fast at 30W and unfortunately there is no wireless charging. It’s a shame, but we think it’s an acceptable compromise for a product of this size.

Price

ASUS Zenfone 9 has a price of 799 €, discounted at launch at € 729 (you find it on the company store). The model with more internal memory instead costs € 849 and the one with 16 GB of RAM € 899. All in all, good prices for the current market: especially the basic one in a discounted version. Follow us on Telegram for any other future discounts.

Final judgement

ASUS Zenfone 9

ASUS Zenfone 9 is undoubtedly one of the best smartphones of the year, so much so that it could entice not only those looking for a top-of-the-range compact smartphone (in that case there isn’t much other choice). It is complete, powerful and even manages to integrate an audio jack connector, a larger battery and powerful hardware into a small body. And this year it also has a successful and distinctive design.
