WhatsApp is coming to WhatsApp

It sounds like a play on words, but it’s not at all and, come to think of it, it’s strange that it hasn’t happened before: WhatsApp will soon be on WhatsApp. To give the indiscretion is the well-informed (as usual) blog WABetaInfospecializing in the novelties hidden in the code of the beta apps of WhatsApp: in the future there will be a official WhatsApp account of the platformbut this account will work more like a Telegram channel than a WhatsApp profile.

WhatsApp: the official account

A future official WhatsApp account will certainly not be managed like a normal profile: with 2 billion users active per month, in fact, this profile would be flooded with requests and messages as early as 5 minutes after opening. It will therefore be a one-way communication channel, from top (of WhatsApp) to bottom (of users).

He found a trace of it WABetaInfo in the beta version 2.22.17.10 of the Android app. WABetaInfo also specifies that we will not be able to answer to sent messages nor send us to the official account. This account, in fact, will be used to send users information on the new functions at the launch, but also tricks and advice of various kinds, including on privacy and security.

Like all other WhatsApp chats, however, this too will be protected by end-to-end encryption and can be silenced. It will even be possible block the official WhatsApp accountor set as ephemeral (i.e. they disappear after reading) received messages.

Why WhatsApp arrives on WhatsApp

Whatsapp was born in 2009 and joined the Facebook group, now Meta, in 2014. We are therefore talking about an app and a platform that has 13 years and that, until now, has never felt the need to establish a direct communication channel with its users.

Now, however, things have changed and for at least two reasons. The first is the memory of what happened between late 2021 and early 2022when WhatsApp announced changes to its own Privacy Policy without giving too many details. One came out of it ruckusdue to the fact that no one understood what would change for privacy.

In a few days the competitor app Telegram earned several million new users and in the weeks following theEuropean Union opened proceedings against WhatsApp. At the heart of the procedure is precisely the fact that WhatsApp had not communicated enough information to its users. An official WhatsApp channel on WhatsApp, at that time, would have been very useful.

The second big reason why WhatsApp will be interested communicating directly with its users is the fact that, by now, large messaging platforms can make the difference between the life and death of entire populations, spreading messages about catastrophic events such as earthquakes, hurricanes or, even worse, life-saving information in case of armed conflicts.

In such a situation, therefore, WhatsApp can no longer not have a official account on WhatsApp.
