WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2022. GERMAN EMIL HERZOG IS GOLD AMONG THE JUNIORS. 14th STAFF

German Emil Herzog is the new world champion in the junior category after a hard-fought race from the first to the last meter. After the bronze in the time trial, the seventeen year old from Simmerberg adds to his collection the most beautiful medal and a world title that confirms his place among the greats. He was one of the favorites on the eve and while some of his rivals raised the white flag due to the rain and many falls, the German was the protagonist of an incredible last lap in which he reprized the Portuguese Antonio Morgado with whom he played the victory in the sprint.

Silver for Antonio Morgadothis year already winner of the Giro della Lunigiana, bronze for the Belgian Vlad Van Mechelen who regulated the group in the sprint. Bad for the blue expedition with Salvoldi’s boys who have never been protagonists of the race, the best at the finish line is Matteo Sclaco, fourteenth.

THE RACE

It was the boys of the junior category who inaugurated the Wollongong road tests; 135.6 km to be covered entirely in a circuit to be repeated 8 times. A track that is not easy to interpret is that of the Australian world championship which includes two stretches, the first already faced during the time trial and the second, that of Mount Pleasant, which sets a 12% point and ends about 8 km from the finish. It was a full race, a continuous battle from the first to the last meter in which none of the guys really spared himself. The rain that before the official start and in some parts of the race made the ground particularly slippery which caused numerous falls. Even illustrious names among the others forced to retire such as the British Joshua Tarling, gold only a few days ago in the time trial.

A first lap raced at over 42 km / h on average gave way to numerous attacks. The first significant attempt takes off during the second lap and sees the Estonian Romet Pajur and the Czech Pavel Novak as protagonists, joined by Zachary Walker (Great Britain), Artem Shmidt and Viggo Moore (United States) and Benjamin Eckerstorfer ( Austria). The six fugitives manage to earn a maximum of 1’04 “while in the group Holland and Germani cancel any attempt to attack by trying to launch in pursuit of the treads.

Under the impulse of the two American athletes, the fugitives manage to keep up with the group, but during the sixth lap, just near the break, their attempt is canceled. In the platoon there is a brawl, in the uphill and downhill sections various platoons come off and try, unsuccessfully, to try to gain a few seconds. The most active are Antonio Morgado and Emil Herzog who attack respectively in the uphill and downhill sections.

The race totally bursts during the penultimate lap when the Austrian Eckerstorfer, started at the end of the previous lap, is reabsorbed by the group. After shots and counter-shots, a quintet is formed consisting of Antonio Morgado (Portugal), Jorgen Nordhagen (Norway), Emil Herzog (Germany) and the French Paul Magnier and Thibaud Gruel. It is Morgado himself, very active uphill who starts when there are 19 km to go. The Portuguese quickly earns against the group where the hard work of the French does not seem to be enough to close the gap.

Morgado climbs up with a 20 “advantage over the group, but Herzog dives into his pursuit, halving his delay in an amen. Two of them are leading the race just when there are 3 km to go to the finish line. It is the German who sets the pace in the lead to counter the group’s comeback, by now impossible, it flew between the German and the Portuguese, head to head until the last meter, but it was Emil Herzog who took the world title.

Herzog thus brings the junior world title back to Germany eight years after Jonas Bokeloh and adds a splendid gold to the brinzo won in the time trial. The group arrives 55 “behind and sees the Belgian Vlad Van Mechelen beat the French Paul Magnier in the sprint for the bronze.

For the Italian national team a somewhat subdued online test also due to the weather conditions and the very tough race. Best of the Azzurri was Matteo Scalco, fourteenth, then Simone Gualdi, thirty-fifth.
