Cerebral and sanguinary. Quirky ideologist and pragmatic organizer. Ayman al-Zawahiri was one of the most dangerous men in the world for at least twenty years: between the early 1990s and the death of his boss and close friend, Osama Bin Laden, who was killed on May 2, 2011. He contributed perhaps decisively to the planning of the most terrible terrorist attack of the modern era: the attack on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon of 11 September 2001. And it was he who theorized the global war on the West. First to Israel and the United States. Then to all the enemies of Islam. As he wrote in what he considered to be his manifesto in 1998: Killing Americans and their allies, civilian or military, an individual duty for every Muslim, in whatever country he is.

The parable of al-Zawahiri perhaps it was already close to its natural conclusion. According to the American secret services, he was ill and for some time confined to a lateral position in the galaxy of Islamic terrorism. The leaders, the new driving forces, meanwhile, had moved from Afghanistan and Pakistan to Syria, Iraq, Libya. However, the doctor remained the leader of al-Qaeda and, from time to time, resurfaced with some video or some writing, always inciting violence. has been the constant trait of his life since his youth in Cairo, where he was born 71 years ago. Son of a professor of pharmacology and grandson of the president of the University of Cairo, Zawahiri graduated with a degree in medicine. (here, his photo story). But at the same time he is fascinated by radical Islam, preached by his uncle Mafhouz Azzam, a harsh critic of secular governments leading Egypt in the 1970s. The young doctor begins attending the Carbonari meetings of the Muslim Brotherhood and then founds his first subversive organization, Jamaat al-Jihad. Objective: to overthrow the unfaithful leaders and establish the Islamic theocracy. In addition to his books and writings, he also studies guerrilla techniques and armed actions.

involved in the attack that cost the life of President Anwar Sadat on 6 October 1981. He was arrested and spent three years in Egyptian jails. He will later tell of being tortured. When he leaves he begins his pilgrimage in search of a place to start again, now immersed in the logic of the holy war. He approaches the Afghan mujahideen. There, on the border with Pakistan, he meets a fiery young man from the Saudi aristocracy. The two smell each other, they recognize each other. The deadliest ticket in world terrorism is born. Osama bin-Laden number 1; Al Zawahiri, number 2. The Egyptian decides to merge his organization into that devised by Osama: Al-Qaeda, the Base. Rich, ambitious, visionary, terrifying. The roles are clear. Bin-Laden the charismatic figure, the catalyst of consensus, the recruiter of young people willing to die for the cause. The Egyptian doctor develops the strategies: he needs a qualitative leap. It is no longer enough to hit the corrupt regimes of the Arab countries. The scaffolding that holds them must be broken, the United States, the distant enemy, must be annihilated.

So it ripens on September 11th. And, according to the reconstructions of the CIA, Al-Zawahiri imagined that catastrophe simply as the starting point of a campaign of terror never seen before. The war waged by the Americans and allies in Afghanistan would have disrupted its plan to procure chemical and biological weapons – in fact, it is precisely at that moment that its decline begins. He takes refuge with his wife and six children in Pakistan. Escapes at least a couple of blitzes. In one of these his wife is trapped in the rubble and shortly afterwards dies. The Obama-Al-Zawahiri couple begins to lose influence. Other protagonists emerge, other projects. Above all, the Islamic Caliphate, chased by Al Zarqawi. Meanwhile, the CIA continues the hunt: Bin-Laden falls. the lethal blow for Al-Qaeda. Number two finds himself at the top, survives for eleven years. But there is no more room for another counter-offensive. The distant enemy reaches him with a drone, the spirit of the new times.
