the third woman in Downing Street, after Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May. For the first time, no white male in key ministries. The priority is the economy, energy and health
FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT
LONDON – From Boris Johnson’s lyric to Liz Truss’s prose: the new premier of Great Britain he presented himself to the nation with a speech devoid of impulses, catchy phrases or cultured quotations, but all focused on the concrete issues to be addressed. There are headwinds, she admitted, but the country can weather the storm and become the bright, modern Britain that I know we can be.
Time itself has not been kind to the new government leader e until the last minute his appearance in front of the Downing Street gate was in doubtwith the rain falling relentlessly on London: then a rapid lightening allowed her to pronounce the opening plea, which did not much succeed in warming the spirits.
As your Prime Minister, I am confident that together we can ride out the storm, rebuild our economy and become the modern, brilliant Britain that I know we can be.
I will take action every day to make that happen ?? pic.twitter.com/1Moqm3cSwu

Liz Truss paid tribute to her predecessor, praised for Brexit, the response to Covid and the reaction to Russia; then immediately went on to list its priorities, which are the tax cut, the energy crisis that bites into the pockets of citizens and the health service in crisis. But even here he avoided specific promises and limited himself to giving generic indications: We will transform Great Britain into a nation of aspirations, he promised, where everyone and everywhere has the opportunities they deserve.
Never in recent history has a new head of government faced such a difficult economic and social situation: inflation travels at 13 per cent and could exceed 20the economy is about to go into recession and millions of people this winter will have to choose whether to eat or heat their homes.
Liz Truss has a few weeks ahead to prove that she is able to reverse course: her intentions are a freeze in energy prices that could cost the state coffers up to 100 billion. And the first crunches are already being felt on the markets with respect to the stability of the pound sterling, already at its lowest, and of public finances.
For Liz Truss it was a hectic day, which opened with a flight to Scotland to meet the queen at Balmoral Castle and receive the investiture as premier; then the return flight and return by car through the streets of London to Downing Street. Leading her to Scotland was Boris Johnson, who went to resign in the hands of Elizabeth.
Early in the morning, the outgoing premier had delivered the farewell speech, complaining once again that he was killed in an unfair and unexpected way. Most importantly, she let a warning glide: like Cincinnato, he said I’m going back to my farm. But as everyone knows, Cincinnato was recalled to power to save the Roman Republic. Liz Truss warned: if it fails, the Johnsonian restoration is just around the corner.
