Near-miss collision between planes at New York airport: the two Boeings 300 meters apart, collision narrowly avoided

Seconds that lasted an eternity. They are the ones in which two planes touched each other at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. There was almost no collision. A Delta Air Boeing 737 and an American Airlines Group Boeing 777 touched each other.

The Delta Air plane was moving on the runway and had to abruptly abort takeoff when the controllers of the air traffic they noticed it was about 300 meters from where the other plane, the American Airlines Boeing, was crossing the same runway.

Practically the first plane, relating to Delta Air flight 1943, was seen passing in front of the second American Airlines plane.

The Wall Street Journal reports it, quoting a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and specifying that US aviation safety officials are investigating how such a thing could have happened.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which manages the Kennedy, declined to comment and referred questions to the FAA

Delta Air Flight 1943 usually flies from Kennedy to the Dominican Republic, according to flight tracking site Flight Aware. American Airlines Flight 106 usually flies from Kennedy to London.

In an audio clip posted to Twitter by Ross Feinstein, a former American Airlines and Transportation Security Administration spokesman, air traffic controllers are heard ordering the Delta crew to cancel takeoff.

One of the controllers then appears to tell the crew members of the American Airlines flight that they should have been on a different runway. Feinstein said it is extremely rare for such close collisions to occur on runways.

“Flying is safer than walking,” he said on Sunday. “It is thanks to the regulators that we have. It’s thanks to the airlines. It is thanks to the pilots. It’s thanks to all of them.”

In a statement, Delta said it is helping authorities with one «complete revision» of the flight, which was carrying 145 passengers and six crew members. After aborting takeoff, the crew returned the aircraft to the gatewhere the passengers disembarked, the airline said, adding that the flight was then delayed overnight.
