Ukrainian soldiers on the Russian border: the reconquest is spreading

from Viviana Mazza

Taken large part of the Kharkiv region. The new front line along the Oskol River. The Russians hit the second thermal power plant in the country. Zelensky: “Cold, hunger and darkness won’t stop us”

KIEV – It was the commander of the armed forces Valerii Zaluzhnyi who announced in the morning that, from the beginning of September to the 200th day of the war in Ukraine, the counter-offensive in the Northeast had captured 3,000 square kilometers of territory and the troops of Kiev were located 50 kilometers from the border with Russia. In the evening new kilometers had been ground: the counter-offensive tore in Moscow much of the Kharkiv region
, arriving to plant the Ukrainian flag at the Hoptivka border crossing. In a long line of cars I am fled to Russia even thousands of civilians: not necessarily all pro-Russian, but people who are afraid of dying under bombs.

The number of Russian POWs is unknown, but videos indicate that there could be hundreds. The “filtering” process also provides the arrest of civilians suspected of being collaborators of the Russians. The most important is the police chief of Balaklyia, while the whereabouts of the pro-Russian mayor of Izyum, a crucial city that military sources say would eventually be recaptured, is not known.

The new front

The new front line is located along the Oskol River in the eastern part of the Kharkiv region. The river cuts through Kupyansk and divides the recaptured neighborhoods from the peripheral industrial zone still in Russian hands. But the situation is constantly changing and the front line will change again. The counter-offensive could now point towards the Luhansk region, in two directions: in the north towards Svatove-Starobilsk, on flat and more open terrain, and in the south towards Lysychansk-Sieverodonetsk, a more urban and industrial area. Lysychansk was the last city of Luhansk to come under Russian control in July, after weeks of very hard fighting. As from the Kharkiv region, news of Russian soldiers’ movements towards the East also arrives from Luhansk, in particular from the cities of Svatove and Starobilsk: Kiev interprets them as further retreats. As for Donetsk, the head of the self-proclaimed republic, Denis Pushilin, he admitted that the situation in the north of the region is “quite tough”: he was referring to the city of Lyman, not far from Sloviansk, which is under Ukrainian control. Russian sources say Kiev soldiers are clearing mines near Vuhlehirsk in preparation for an attack in Donetsk.

More reduced news from the South: according to the Ukrainian armed forces, the Russians have left some positions in the Kherson region and some villages have been recaptured in recent days, including Oleksandrivka, the location where the Italian journalist Mattia Sorbi.

The war on energy

During the night, the Russians hit the second largest thermal power plant in the country, in Kremenchuk, leaving Kharkiv, Poltava, part of Odessa and Kremenchuk itself in the dark. A “revenge” against the infrastructure in response to the counter-offensive, according to President Zelensky, who assured that “Cold, hunger, darkness and thirst” will not stop the Ukrainians. “Do you still believe that we are one people?” – He said turned to Russia -. Do you still think you can scare us, break us, force us to make concessions? Read my lips: without gas or without you? Without you. Without light or without you? Without you ». At theCnn
the Ukrainian leader said he was not “at the moment” ready to negotiate with Moscow: “I don’t see any desire on their part.”

The Kiev authorities announced yesterday at 3:41 am the shutdown of reactor number 6 in Zaporizhzhia (the last one left in operation); a few hours later a backup power transmission line was restored to the nuclear power plant. Shutdown “was absolutely the last option” had said Saturday in an interview with Courier
the head of the Kiev nuclear inspectorate Oleh Korikov. In the absence of external electricity, the reactor cooling would have depended on diesel generators. “We will consume diesel fuel, of which we have reserves for about ten days.” Then yesterday the reactor was reconnected to the grid, but the risk level remains high. “On a scale of danger from 1 to 10, we are at 7,” says Korikov. “The plant is in a war zone, it is occupied by the Russians, there are unauthorized personnel, explosives … It could be like Chernobyl or Fukushima. The only solution is de-militarization ”.
