War in Ukraine, what effect will General Winter have on operations?

Snow, mud, cold. General Winter enters operations in Ukraine. It was expected. The images show some tanks fighting in the quagmire, others provide details on how the soldiers try to make their bunkers livable.

The moves

Observers have been discussing the contenders’ future moves for days. The Russians – they say – continue to stabilize the defenses to the south, moving some units to the east where they have been trying to advance on Bakhmut for weeks. The multiple objective: to hold, to cause losses, to wait. Much attention paid to capabilities of the war industry in making other material available. The indications are not uniform: some analysts express doubts (reiterating their lack of confidence) but there are always those who invite us not to underestimate the effort and orders given by Vladimir Putin. The Ukrainians, on the other hand, would like to free up some new locations in the southern sector but they also have to regain their energy after weeks of intense fighting. Meanwhile they threaten the lines of communication/supply of the enemy, in particular the railway route which is now within the range of action of the heavy artillery. The weather conditions everyone, even if we are talking about armies accustomed to this climate. Much to depend on equipment availablefrom the training, from the quality of the reserves and of the mobilized soldiers.

The drones

Within this frame there is still Tehran. In recent days it has been revealed that the Russians will build Iranian-designed kamikaze drones under licensea later development to the initial supply and further proof of the pact between the two countries. Collaboration is beneficial to both. Moscow adds pieces to its arsenal, with particular attention to bombs useful for hitting civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, starting with electricity, the Achilles’ heel for Kiev despite the commitment of its technicians and contingency plans. The mullahs, for their part, collect currency and perhaps perfect weapons. A context that could – for some – lead Israel to abandon neutrality by supplying anti-aircraft systems which Zelensky asks. In the last few hours, the president has also turned to the West, soliciting help to expand the shield, an appeal preceded by announcements from Great Britain and Sweden on the sending of new equipment precisely to counter the massive bombing. Berlin’s offer to Poland should also be noted: The Germans are ready to deploy Patriot anti-missile batteries and Eurofighter fighters to boost the Polish defense.

The train

There was a symbolic moment over the weekend: the arrival of the Ukrainian train in liberated Kherson. The locomotive was equipped with homemade armor and in front pushed two empty wagons, one ancient countermeasure in case there were bombs on the tracks.
