Withdrawal of the Russians, the cities of the east return to Ukraine. Moscow: “We’re just reorganizing”

The yellow flag, like the fields of wheat and blue sky, a symbol of peace, flies over the rooftops. «Kupiansk is Ukraine. Glory to the armed forces ”, the adviser to the president of the Kharkiv Regional Council, Nataliya Popova, exults on social media. This is the announcement of the liberation of the city, occupied by the Russians on February 27 and which has become a fundamental hub for the supplies of Moscow’s troops. It fell as well as Izyum, where Ukrainian militias also yesterday forced the forces of President Vladimir Putin to withdraw. “We just started clearing the city. The first military units have arrived ”, informs a spokesperson for the Bohun Brigade. “The Russians fled and left behind weapons and ammunition.” On the ground, he says, there were also some deserters’ uniforms.

War, the Ukrainian counter-offensive breaks the Russian front: I recovered a thousand kilometers. “Moscow is paying a high price”

DEMOBILIZATION
The eastern front of Ukraine, which has been invaded for more than five months, crumbles, collapsing along a line about a hundred kilometers long from the south of Kharkiv to the Donbass. Shevchenkovo and Balakliya surrender, while the Ukrainian counter-offensive proceeds towards Lysychansk and the troops arrive on the outskirts of Lugansk, conquered in early July by the Russians after a hard battle. “I am convinced that after a few more successes at the front, even small victories, Russian soldiers will begin to flee,” predicts Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov, interviewed by the RBC-Ukraine news agency. Certainly the operation launched by Kiev on 6 September to regain lost ground in the north-east of the country is at a turning point.

Although the Russians try to minimize: “The troops are reorganizing near Balakliya and Izyum to increase efforts in the direction of Donetsk, in order to achieve the objectives of the special military operation to liberate the Donbass,” says the ministry of Defense of Moscow, quoted by Interfax. According to the state news agency Ria Novosti, the Russian authorities in Kupiansk “remain in the city despite the bombings, while the evacuation of the population is underway”. Discontent is spreading among the pro-Russians, however, and accusations of “high command errors” made by the first Deputy Minister of Information of the Donetsk separatists, Danylo Bezsonov, rebound. The head of the pro-Russian administration of Izyum, Vladimir Sokolov, admits that “the situation is very difficult. In the last two weeks the city has been under constant bombardment by Ukrainian forces with foreign ammunition: Himars rocket launchers and 155 mm M777 howitzers have caused destruction and a large number of deaths and injuries ”. The advance of Moscow, as British intelligence points out in its report, would therefore be crushed towards the border line: the soldiers of Kiev managed to wedge themselves “up to 50 kilometers into the territory previously controlled by Russia”, hence the enemy militias around Izium “are increasingly isolated” and the reconquest of Kupiansk represents “a serious blow to the Kremlin because it is located along the supply routes”.

The liberation of the city is considered the most significant victory of the Ukrainians after the withdrawal of Moscow from the Kiev region. While for Vladimir Putin it is a burning defeat. Kupiansk is located along what used to be the front line between the two armies and the American think tank Institute for the study of war calls it “a key logistical hub”. A map shared on Twitter by Veli-Pekka Kivimaki, an analyst of Finnish services, highlights how many railway lines in the north-east of Ukraine pass through here.

DEVASTATION
Also in the east of the country, troops from Kiev entered the village of Grakove yesterday and found themselves facing devastation: electric pylons knocked down, cables scattered on the ground, houses gutted, bomb craters. The road from Kharkiv is littered with skeletons of cars burned or crushed by tanks. But for the pro-Russians it is fake news spread from Kiev “to sow panic”. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky summarizes the results of the counterattack: the troops have regained control of over thirty towns and villages in the Kharkiv region, the estimate is 2,500 square kilometers of territory. Yesterday he had a long conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron, in which the critical situation of Zaporizhzia was addressed. “Our position is that the only way to protect Europe from a nuclear disaster is to demilitarize the plant,” Zelensky relaunches on Twitter. On the diplomatic side, meanwhile, the West continues to show its support with the surprise visit of the German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock: “I am in Kiev to show that they can continue to count on us.”
