Catching up with Brittany Lincicome

In the 10 years since she burst upon the LPGA scene, Floridian Brittany Lincicome has certainly made an impact.

After rattling off six consecutive wins to capture the 2006 HSBC Women’s World Match Play Championship, Lincicome – known out on Tour as “Bam Bam” for her loooong drives – has competed on four Solheim Cup squads and pocketed five more victories and two majors, including the ANA Inspiration in April.

Lincicome has amassed more than $7 million in career earnings and is currently ranked 13th in the Race to the CME Globe.

As she prepared for this week’s Canadian Pacific Women’s Open in Vancouver, I asked Lincicome about her season so far, her practice routine, the LPGA’s rise in popularity, her closest friends on Tour, and how she is getting ready for her upcoming December wedding to former South African long drive competitor Dewald Gouws.

JL: With a major and four top 10’s this year, how are you feeling about the state of your game right now? What are you working on?

BL: I am feeling good about my year. I am happy and have played well. I would like to finish strong and enjoy a Solheim Cup victory. Mostly, I am just focusing on my outlook and belief that I can compete at each event.

JL: With your wedding upcoming, how much time have you been able to plan for that with a full schedule of events and commitments?

BL: It is a fun distraction. Luckily, the wedding is in the offseason so it sets up well without disturbing my tournament schedule.

JL: The LPGA’s growth in popularity shows no signs of stopping. In the 10 years you’ve been out there, how has the atmosphere changed?

BL: We have always had great fans, but I do think we are reaching some new people. You are seeing a lot more kids at the events and they seem to know who the players are.

JL: What does your practice routine look like?

BL: I am not traditional in how I prepare. I like to go play. I play golf and that gets me in a rhythm for tournaments. I don’t really just go to the range and hit balls.

JL: Next year’s Rio Olympics and the return of golf. Do you think about being a pat of that?

BL: I would love to represent my country and I do think about it. It would mean so much.

JL: What is something people might not know about you?

BL: I love kids. My parents own a daycare facility and I love to be around kids. I love their enthusiasm and honesty.

JL: How do you handle the stress that comes along with being a professional athlete?

BL: I attempt to not place pressure on my self, but of course, some pressure does creep through. I am lucky to have a great family and a great fiancée that allow me to have balance in life and not feel too much pressure.

JL: Who are some of your closest friends on Tour?

BL: I am so lucky to have a lot of friends on tour, but Anna Nordquist and Brittany Lang are a couple of my closest friends. As a Tour, we support each other. We are there for the good times and the bad.

JL: Dream foursome?

BL: My dad, my fiancée and maybe Jordan Spieth.
