Report: 2024 U.S. Open heading to Pinehurst No. 2

Pinehurst No. 2 will host the 2024 U.S. Open, according to a report in the Charlotte News-Observer.

The telltale sign, according to the report, was the Pinehurst Village Council voting Tuesday to approve a licensing agreement with the USGA for the 2024 Open. A formal announcement is expected July 22.

This would be the fourth U.S. Open for Pinehurst in a 26-year span, with Payne Stewart besting Phil Mickelson in 1999, Michael Campbell shocking the world in 2005 and Martin Kaymer taking the Open in 2014 as the first half of an unprecedented two-week span in which the U.S. Open and U.S. Women's Open were contested in consecutive weeks.

The USGA has only announced future U.S. Open sites through 2021, when Torrey Pines will welcome the U.S. Open for the first time since 2008. The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., is expected to host the '22 Open, with Los Angeles Country Club taking the 2023 duties.
